About Prada

Prada is part of the wider trading company, Prada Group (originally called I Pellettieri d'Italia) and is one of the best known designer fashion houses in the world. It came into existence in Italy in 1913, as a successful leather goods retailer based in Milan. In late 1970, the retailer's business came to the attention of the renowned designer Miuccia Prada, who brought Patrizio Bertelli's business, took it under the fashion house's name and consequently combined the two organisations together to build one of the world's most highly recognised, coveted and influential global brands in existence.

Prada has long been recognised and feted as being one of the ultimate and most-desirable Italian designer labels available. Its speciality is luxury items for both men & women. Much of this is down to the brand's superior quality and design vision - Prada is seen as being one of the fashion industry's most influential designers, providing high status symbol, luxurious items renowned for their quality, artisan tailoring and high glamour.

Prada today retails a number of well known lines of high-fashion, footwear, sunglasses, gifts, fragrances, travel items and luggage and both mens' and womens' accessories. More recently in 2000, it also launched a line of high-end skincare products. It also has a more affordable sister line in Miu Miu, which focuses on high fashion, with a focus on latest catwalk trends and more quirky design. As well as its clothing, Prada is particularly well known for its handbags - it released its classic handbag first in 1985, and it has continued to be one of the most desirable items on any fashionistas shopping list!

Prada's clothing ranges provide items with clean, unfettered lines, opulent and glamourous fabrics and unfussy colour combinatons. The brand aims to be sexy, yet discreet - like so many Italians! The range provides basics such as shirts, sweaters and trousers for men and suiting, dresses and tops for women - with the best of materials and simple, beautiful tailoring in muted colour palettes.

Prada runs over two hundred stores across the world today. Until 2006 it owned Jil Sander and Helmut Lang - but the company made the executive decision to sell them off. With its parent company based in The Netherlands (Prada Holding NV), the company has so far avoided going public.

Like so many other designer fashion labels, Prada has been fighting an ongoing battle with counterfeiters and to guarantee the authenticity of its products, it retails them solely from a network of officially recognised global boutique outlets and its online presence. Even its boutiques are designed to reinforce the luxury brand, with architects such as R. Koolhas designing Prada's flagship boutiques across Europe and beyond.

Like other fashion design houses, Prada holds exclusive fashion shows to preview its latest season's creations every year - and to secure a front-row seat is the ultimate dream of many a fashion magazine editor or celebrity. The company seeks to cast new faces in each campaign, and has launched many international modelling careers as a result. It also has its own foundation, which seeks to promote and further the arts, showcasing a number of artists' work at the Foundation's bespoke exhibition space in Milan.
